Before I came to Japan I thought it was a modern country, however when I actually came there I was disappointed to find out that it's far from modern.

If you venture outside the small areas of major cities that have modern office buildings and a few high end residential buildings most buildings in japan are of 3rd world standard built out of paper thin wood and corrugated iron sheets, without central heating and generally super crappy. If it's not built like a shanty town shack then buildings are out of depression grey/brown concrete with prison cell sized apartments.

There is nothing interesting to do either. All the otaku areas are super tiny.

The bottom line: Don't come to Japan expecting an advanced civilization.

Actually China has developed nicely in the recent years which I can't say about Japan.

I'm not Chinese so I don't know why you're referring to "your country". China is just an example, Tokyo is pretty run down and boring by western standards.

>> No.10279425

Not previous poster mentioning Chinese cities, but they are somewhat variable.

In general they are actually in very good condition Chinese cities, but at a significant cost. Any areas that are likely to get high public exposure are renovated whether or not the local business wants it to happen. I've been to a shop in China at noon, gone to a course, come back, and the shop had been demolished flat for rebuilding projects. (The owner was now running his shop on the street, with broken fridges full of drinks still - they didn't even let him get his shit out.)

So Chinese cities are in good condition, but your property rights are worse than the spanish. And thats why they are.

Though some side streets can get real shanty fast in Shanghai.

Also there were bike/motorcycle lanes seperate from the road, which I think is a nice innovation. China really has the luxury of space to make this kind of thing possible in its modern engineered cities. They've had the advantage of learning from every other countries failures in infrastructure first.

Shanghai is one place I went, for a few days. Spent most of my time in Nanjing and Wuhan, which all three are quite different places. None the less, general standard was good.

Actually I'd probably say Wuhan was the best place. It had generally middle class feel about the whole place and wasn't built to cater to tourists, so you know you aren't getting a big facade like you are in Shanghai or Nanjing with the flatten it all and rebuild mentality. Although, its probably mostly newer than either of those places, since its the nearest place to the Three Gorges Dam and probably developed for the workers. Great road system, pavements everywhere, fair prices for everything - good place. Plus the scenery is just amazing around there.

Motel had shit bedsheets though. Next time I should actually consider bringing my own.

A large amount of japanese people work contractor jobs without job security and very low pay. The welfare payments are enough for some food if you're homeless but you won't be able to rent a place with that kind of money (~30.000Yen a month if I recall that right). Japan is very anti welfare.

That specific case doesn't look like "terrible building standard" in the traditional sense, where corners are cut in the consideration for cost.
It looks like a case of failing (miserably) to properly assess the ground around the foundation - think tower of pisa except on steroids, resulting in leaning and collapse far faster than any possible response.
If anything I'm guessing they must've used a lot of reinforced concrete if the building hasn't visibly cracked from turning over and collapsing.

A state is basically what you get when you own things collectively.

Yes, you can have a "senate" which has no enforcing power, is made up of volunteer, ran by charitable donations, and issues non-binding guidelines for governance. You could call it a government, but without jointly owned property it would be a non-profit think tank.

In any case, my point is that communism and democracy are orthogonal concepts. People shouldn't use the logic, "USSR was communist, and its democratic government was subverted by corrupt leadership. Therefore, any country that's communist is not democratic."

>> No.10287908

That article is laughable,

"Indeed, if you benchmark the Chinese Communist Party against a definitional checklist authored by Robert Service, the veteran historian of the Soviet Union, the similarities are remarkable. As with communism in its heyday elsewhere, the party in China has eradicated or emasculated political rivals, eliminated the autonomy of the courts and media, restricted religion and civil society, denigrated rival versions of nationhood, centralized political power, established extensive networks of security police, and dispatched dissidents to labor camps."
