In short I started by learning hiragana and katakana, then I learnt some vocabulary (nothing major 50 word lists, maybe 500 words total), then I tried reading an untranslated visual novel to motivate myself but the kanji got in the way big time. After that I decided to learn Kanji and got to 690 kanji (learning the shape and english meanings) before I got burnt out. The best path IMO (if you can handle holding off on reading for a bit) is:

1. Learn the jouyou kanji (readings unnecessary, RTK1 is fine)
2. Learn grammar
3. Grind vocab until you are comfortable to start reading

So your grammar is good to go? If you don't already have, download anki and the Kanjidamage and core2k6 deck. Learn only the definition (and maybe the on-yomi) of each kanji of Kanjidamage and then move on to core2k6. There you can learn all the readings *together* with vocab, so you brain won't explode.

Reading untranslated VNs is a good idea, but next time don't do it without ITH, Rikaichan (or Rikaikun if you use Chrome) and Furigana inserter. Also, take some easy to read moege.

Once you are able to read, one thing that will help you improve and hone your skills is to find something like a light novel that has already been translated, and try translating it yourself, comparing yourself to the finished translation. I am going to check out the patch anyway, but you can't blame people for criticizing it when the supposed translation is questionable and when the supposed translator even admitted to not being able to read Japanese.

Being proficient in Japanese isn't actually an unreasonable standard to expect from translators.

For the sake of argument, I've read about literary authors who translate from an unfamiliar foreign language with nothing more than a grasp of grammar/syntax and a dictionary. Judge on the accuracy of the product, not how they get there.

That only works if you have the correct background for the language for guesslating. For example, I could do that with German. I have a basic understanding of German grammar, and my German vocabulary is practically nonexistent, but since I'm fluent in Dutch and English, I can use the similarities in language to guess the meaning of words, phrases, idioms, sentence structures, etc. I can basically read and mostly understand a German text despite knowing next to no German.

Japanese, on the other hand? Using AGTH and a dictionary, I can mostly get the dialogue, but I'm completely lost on the narration. Japanese is the only Asian language I do anything with, so my tricks for reading German don't apply here.

So while translation without really knowing the language might work for, say, Chinese translators, random English-speaking folk definitely won't be able to do it for Japanese.
