I think the bug with the network options is being caused by people who are blocked on outgoing ports due to proxy, firewall, or what have you.

He probably didn't figure for errors that would occur when trying to access things that are network reliant.

Get a scroll, rod, or learn the spell of Recharge.

Thieves guild is the most reliable place for lockpicks. If you don't have a membership, then you'll need to get lucky in general stores or dungeons.

You can collect small medals lying around various towns. Hit space in town, and if you sense something nearby, move around and hit space again. When you see something shiny, you're getting closer. Eventually you'll find it and pick it up. 100 medals are hidden around the various towns in this manner. Good luck.

Don't identify anything you don't plan to use. If you really really can't afford anything, wait for your salary to give you some equipment.

IMO, at the beginning, the only things you should really identify are the rods/scrolls. For rods, scrolls, books and potions, once you've IDed them, subsequent rods/scrolls/books/potions you find will be known to you (but you still have to identify them to find out how many charges they have left). Books and potions aren't as useful as rods and scrolls in the beginning of the game though so you can ID those later. But rods of ice/fire/lightning/identification will be very useful for you early on. So will scrolls of return, magical map, etc...

Don't read any books at home or town btw, chances are, you'll fail and end up summoning monsters you can't kill and you'll have to end up avoiding home or said town and it'd suck.
