What are you playing? What are you looking forward to? What have you finished? You know the drill.

>> No.10249500

Do you ever think the fact that this thread is very popular means we should split it up into distributed threads (e.g. one per topic) and then people can just post in the ones they like? There's nothing wrong with a thread not hitting 100+ replies, and I think we've taken "condense your threads" too far given that this is 30% of the board's content.

Provisional threads for high-profile releases that requires a lot of plot discussing is enough. When people stay on topic this thread moves quite slowly as it is, it's just off topic shit that makes it fill faster. I think diluting would only result in more off topic replies to artificially fill the threads. Condensed is good.

It used to be like that. As more people joined, though, VNs became a less popular subject, and was pushed to condense their threads. Now all we have is a VN General were people hold monologues about untranslated VNs (sometimes getting a couple replies) and the VN translation stats thread, where all translated VN discussion goes.

>>10249511
They're instantly flooded by shitposters and otherwise generally ignored. Large part of the reason for it being ignored is the fact that nobody's used to non-general VN threads anymore; I used to frequently check /jp/'s first two pages for VN discussion, but nowadays I no longer do that because all of it is in two threads anyways.

Is there at least a Rewrite thread up currently, actually? Newly-translated VNs are one of the few exceptions, but I haven't seen one yet.

These threads usually have multiple conversations going on at once. "What did you think of X?" followed by "Someone mentioned Y, so I downloaded it and..."
X and Y should have their own threads. These threads are relatively fast and there is nothing wrong with having a small thread. If only two people are interested in a certain game and it gets five replies, so what? At least it's natural and less arbitrary than forcing all your discussions into one 300+ reply thread.

Condensed threads have a significantly raised posing barrier. If your post isn't a direct reply to another post or does not contain a detailed analysis of a VN or a route in it, you generally don't post it in the VN General thread. For example, I've been wanting to ask somewhere what the locked routes in Rewrite are (I know Akane, Moon and Terra are locked, any others? How do you unlock them?), but making a simple post just to ask that just feels 'not done' in a thread like the VN General.

Finished Sayonara wo Oshiete earlier on.

Its core message was rather depressing, if I'm interpreting it correctly. Hitomi built up a world full of people to 'love' and 'save', whereas it was self-love more than anything considering none of them even existed (bar Mutsuki). He formulated these dramatic scenarios like Nozomi having a history of rape and fancied himself as a knight in shining armor saving the princesses... Only to end up destroying them all. You would think that that'd be the point where he'd start facing reality having seemingly shattered the illusions, but unfortunately the ending implied he's only doomed to repeat that cycle, again and again.

It's a pity, really. It conflicted with his affection for Mutsuki, who in a different time and place he could have had something with. Maybe if he weren't so terribly destructive had such a deep loathing of women, or weren't so fixated on this concept of saving others.

I made an FAQ for the OP of these general threads. Tell me if I should add anything.

This thread is for discussing both translated and untranslated Japanese visual novels. Troubleshooting and asking for help is generally tolerated but don't be annoying about it.
Any trouble you have with translation patches and related inquiries should be directed to the VN general in >>>/vg/ since not many of us here keep up with the translation scene.
We can sometimes help you with Japanese but most general Japanese language questions should be directed towards the Japanese daily thread on >>>/a/.

FAQ:

Q: How do I go about finding VNs that I'd be interested in?
A: If you're looking for a specific genre or fetish, vndb.org is a database of VNs with a tag system. It can also rank all VNs by average user rating but it's heavily biased towards translated VNs. If you're looking for VNs that just came out or are coming out, Getchu.com has both rankings based on number of sales and number of pre-orders, which are usually indicative of what people are excited about. You can also search games by company, artist, scenario writer, etc. You can also ask in this thread but you have to be specific as to what you want, not "Hey guys, recommend something good to read."

Q: Where do I get VNs in a very legal manner?
A: The first place to check out is sukebei.nyaa.eu for torrents. If that fails you, then Google it with "<Name of VN in Japanese> torrent". If that fails you then try looking it up on Winny, Share, and/or Perfect Dark. If that fails you you can ask in this thread.

Q: Where do I buy VNs?
A: Check out the buyfag thread on >>>/a/.

Q: How do I install this Japanese shit?
A: Set your system locale to Japanese.

Q: How do I get this Japanese shit working?
A: Try changing everything in the Regional Settings in the Control Panel to Japanese. Minori games also require you to change the time zone and system display language to Japanese. If you're using anything other than Ultimate or Enterprise editions, use Vistalizator to do this.

Q: Where do I get 100% complete saves?
A: http://sagaoz.net/savedata/ If that doesn't have it, Google "<VN name in Japanese> セーブデータ".

Even though people should lurk, it's useful to have a list of questions and answers (e.g. *for* lurkers).

4chan would be a much better place if everyone read the FAQ and believed the happy picture of 4chan it paints before they dove into the boards.

If you want to play untranslated games yet you don't even know how to change the system locale or google walkthrough, I don't think you should be able to play those games in the first place. Any additional questions can be answered in /vg/ thread.
As for the Japanese learning/whining posts, well we can just ignore those or direct them to /a/ Japanese thread.

This, there isn't some rule that says you can't make a thread about an untranslated or translated thread beside this one. There's no need to officially split up this general or anything, just make a thread if you want to. Hell, if you're worried about people not seeing it then post a link to it in this thread.

Also, whether or not you can technically discuss translated things here, the fact is that now this thread is 99% untranslated VNs. Saying the /vg/ thread is better isn't just a way to eliminate english-only plebeians or something, it's genuinely a better place to discuss them. Bringing up translated things will possibly get you a few replies here, but at the worst someone will start shitting himself over talking about translated VNs. So /vg/ is just a better place to go, the aren't THAT bad.

And about a FAQ, I don't think it's necessary. Things have worked fine like this, we've just had a bad last couple threads.

Because /jp/ is beta as fuck. Shitposting? That's fine. Making a thread about Tsukihime? In 2012? Are you some sort of newfag casual English-only peasant? Get out of /jp/!

>people that want to talk about Saya or Fate for the millionth time would be better served in /vg/, because they've already been discussed to death here
This is a stupid attitude and one of the things ruining /jp/. If I had a penny for every time I saw a post like, "Well, I want to discuss XYZ, but we've already discussed it..." or, "I wish we had XYZ threads again," I could have bought the /jp/ Manor by now.
I've been playing VNs for years, yet I've never played Fate/stay night. I have it downloaded, I just never get around to playing it. What if I want to discuss it? What if other people do too, whether they be old or new? It doesn't stop us discussing Touhou. Not all discussions have to be filling dead air with mindless chatter like /vg/, or constant bumping and the occasional status update like GUST threads. If people aren't interested, they aren't interested. Thread dies, OP moves on, tune in again next week same Bat-time same Bat-channel.

There's no point in making a translated vn thread on /jp/ when /vg/ already exists. If you want the thread to move slower, you should be supportive of an FAQ since it will keep people from posting. You just need a line in the beginning heavily suggesting discussions of recent games that have been translated be transferred over to /vg/ since they'll find better company.

You seem insistent that people go to /vg/. I accept your reasoning and it could be a better place, but we shouldn't let external factors like that influence OUR discussion. (Primarily translated) visual novels are one of the main reasons this board exists. There's no need to shoo people to /vg/. If translated VNs are controversial, it's the people creating the controversy that are the problem, not the people trying to discuss them.

This isn't some borderline case like a JRPG company, it's the core of /jp/ mentioned explicitly in the rules.

/vg/ is fucking terrible, unless it's gone against all current 4chan trend and somehow gotten better in the last few months since I looked at their /vn/ thread. Because back then it was an abomination.

I agree with others that some of the current attitudes some posters take ("translated VN discussion should go to /vg/," "VN discussion should be condensed to one thread," etc.) have been detrimental. It reduces the number of people on /jp/ who want to talk about VNs and the number of threads about VNs, and as a result not only is /jp/'s VN scene worse off, so is the board as a whole. I miss the amount of VN discussion this board used to have, even if it was mostly translated stuff, and even if it was something we had already had a thread or two about.

Only really read Koiken Otome out of this batch of new releases so far due to a lack of time.
The beginning was fairly dull but picked up once the plot started. The fights themselves were fairly predictable I guess, but were handled decently I guess. The one at the end of the training camp arc was probably my favorite of the ones I've seen.
In terms of routes, I've only started Touko's, and the main drama so far was a type I find sort of stupid but they wrapped it up pretty quickly so it wasn't too detracting in my opinion. They've foreshadowed some other personal drama, so I guess I'll see how that plays out.

Otherwise, it's the first game in a while that had me debating which heroine's route to do first so that was nice I guess, and with how some of the side characters have been written so far, it's sort of a shame there's only 4 heroines.

It's all relative. '10.0' would indicate the best story I could ever imagine reading, '1.0' would indicate the worst story I could ever imagine reading (and yes, I managed to rate a game that), and anything in-between is relative and dependent on other scores (though biased to general standards, such as '7' being a game I enjoyed but did not consider great). For example, these are my >8.5 scores:

9.8 Ever17
9.7 Remember11
9.5 Umineko & Chiru
9.0 Clannad
9.0 Fate/stay night
8.8 Higurashi (1-4)
8.6 Steins;Gate
8.5 Time Hollow

There's a somewhat significant gap between the best story I could imagine reading and Ever17, so there's 0.2 points difference. IMO, Ever17 is just slightly better than Remember11, so there's 0.1 point difference. Then there's some of a gap to Umineko, meaning 0.2 points. Between Umineko and Clannad/fsn there's a huge gap, so it jumps 0.5 points. Those two are rated equal because I enjoyed them about equally. Then Higurashi is slightly worse, S;G is slightly worse than that, and that's just a bit better than Time Hollow. The list continues on like that with the gaps simply representing how different my experiences with the VNs were.

TL;DR: It's a combination of ordering them by enjoyment and expressing the difference between enjoyment of VNs.

I'm not GundamAce (he actually rated Never7 a '9'). But to answer your question, the company that got the infinity license when KID went bankrupt went ahead and made a game to cash in on the hype generated by the Ever17 remake (which was in development at that point). It has nothing to do with the infinity series. For a very long time, VNDB used to have ratings without decimals. (At the time, Ever17, R11 and Umineko were all '10' for me, and Clannad, f/sn and Higurashi were all '9' for me.) At some point, you run out of numbers to accurately represent your opinion; Ever17 and Remember11 clearly deserved to be above Umineko, but Umineko also deserved to be above f/sn, Clannad and Higurashi. On the other hand, putting those three on '8' would make it seem like they were just quite good VNs, while I clearly feel they are masterpieces. Over time 10 options aren't enough to accurately express your opinion on VNs, especially near the top, where the line between 'masterpiece' and 'I might never read a story this good again' needs to be expressed somehow.

I could rant for a while why I hate the game, but I'll just sum up my thoughts: all the routes are bad to mediocre, 4/5 routes feel like stupid eroge routes, there's barely any mysteries, the main plot is incredibly stupid, and the main twist was so obvious that I figured it out before the first route was over. Gatenkei is a masterpiece, frankly speaking, but very NTR-oriented so that will put off a lot of people. The way the relationship between the protagonist and heroine is written and developed is among the best you'll find in the medium.

The twist in Ningen Debris is fine in my opinion, just not as good as Biniku no Kaori's. I found the protagonist interesting rather than detestable, though I liked him less as the game progressed. The main problem with the game for me was that all the mysteries are resolved halfway through it, so it gets kinda boring after that.

One thing I really like about Elf's games is how they integrate background noise as part of the BGM as well. There are scenes where all you hear is car passing by or cricket chirping and wind chime, yet those noises compliment the atmosphere much better than any BGM could.

Oh and the way how the story is weaved into the sex scenes make them amusing to read. Instead of the heroines moaning for 5 minutes about the protagonist's sexual expertise, the characters actually carry out normal conversation, although I consider that more of the writer's territory rather than the maker's.

Saya is the greatest.

Since tenso is only a proxy you still need to use a foreign card to pay unless I'm mistaken and I heard sites are blacklisting tenso since they ship to foreigner

Oh yeah, forgot to mention -- some sites indeed won't ship to Tenso (and other proxy services I'd imagine) because they recognize it as a proxy service. Toranoana and Melonbooks come to mind (couldn't buy Suika's Sanjinkou doujin back when it was still available, damn it), but amazon should still be fine

Translating and distribution is done for free well enough anyway, I'm sure the problem they're having is with negotiating for licenses. I'm sure Japanese companies don't want to entrust their precious IPs to jumpstart gaijin companies anyway, I wouldn't want to if I were in their shoes.

If it were me I'd probably just stick with one company's catalog at first to build up a library and a raport, so that when I went to the next company they could see how well I did with the first one.

I don't see why not. You'd use advertising to turn one-time players into repeat customers. People who've played G Senjou no Maou or FS/N or Monmusu Girl Quest probably did so because of their popularity and would like to play others, but aren't sure how to really get more VNs like those.

If you're some forty-year old executive from.a tiny company that makes porn games and a big-shot from the Ministry of the Economy comes and tells you that this could cause a big incident, and do a great deal of damage to the Japanese software industry, and if left alone it might attract a lot of negative attention in the mainstream Japanese press, and blah blah blah blah blah, you're probably going to comply, even if you have to call in the whole team and have a meeting about what to do, which will end in something along the lies of "well it sucks that we put all this work and money into Rapeplay but I guess it can't be helped" and issue a notice to shelf everything.
