For those of you who've been into the Touhou scene on or before year 2008, I have a question: Did Touhou fandom go through sort of drastic change that altered the tastes of its H-doujin artists?

I'm asking this because I've been looking through a lot of Touhou-based H-doujins in g.e-hentai/exhentai now, and I noticed that a overwhelming majority of titles released on or before the year 2008 mostly consist of yuri/futanari doujins. You'd be hard-pressed to find a title released in the years 2007 or 2006 that involves one of the girls having hetero sex.The ratio of yuri/futa to hetero doujins was 10:1.

But look at the titles released in 2009, particularly during C76; you'll notice there's been a significant jump in hetero H-doujins where Touhous are sucking off faceless dudes. By the end of 2009, the ratio of futa/yuri to hetero doujins was around 4:5. By the end of 2010, the ratio becomes 1:4. By the end of 2011, the ratio is around 1:8.

We're near the end of 2012, and if you pick a random Touhou H-doujin without looking nowadays, your chances of encountering a title with the yuri/futa tag versus a purely hetero doujin is around 1:10.

We've all known that yuri themes have dominated non-H doujins all this time in the Touhou fandom, and this hasn't changed at all. So how did the H-doujin circles switch from drawing titles with Touhous being lesbians and dickgirls to drawing titles with Touhous getting fucked by faceless men?

Touhou wasn't famous on 4chan(and thus the net) at the beggining(2004), but long after.
I think it was when the second or third touhou game was released that I started seeing touhou images here on 4chan @ /a/.
Then came the Alice spam on /b/ and the subsequent banning of touhou on a.

I came to know about touhou on /a/ because of a certain miko image of who I was informed was Meimu. A Reimu from another dimension or something... IDK.

Still though, it explains why Touhou got more popular overseas, but what about the Japanese side? Did it get more popular over there to the point where it attracted more H-doujin artists or something?

It was because of ZUN's lack of copyright for his characters which gave doujin artist a "go do whatever you like with my characters" license, and the boom of flash videos including touhous.

ZUN started writing the Akyuu's encyclopedias and a greelighted a bunch of official manga after TH10 and the engine change.
There was definitely a boom in popularity sometime in 2007 after the release of PoFV.
The maikaze anime preview also came out at about the same time.

I'm pretty sure someone here already said something to that effect, but this bears repeating: They didn't switch from yuri to hetero. They switched from hetero of something else to hetero of Touhou. Porn is pretty much the only thing that you can reliably support your living with when you're a doujin artist. Therefore popular porn artists operate on different principles than most of the doujinshi scene - they don't draw what they like, they draw what's popular to maximize sales. And ever since 2008, the most popular subject on the Japanese doujinshi scene is, well, guess what.

Depends what your definition of "popular" is. In 2008, Touhou became the sole biggest doujin franchise. It was plenty popular earlier, though, basically within two years from EoSD's release. Just nowhere near as popular as it is now.

About 5 years ago most touhou fans were futanari and yurifags or rather people who just wanted to see their favourite characters together, but after the big touhou boom a lot of secondary scum joined the boat making the demand for hetero and faceless men become more prevalent. This development also applies to /jp/. It's a shame really, but we've got to live with what we created.

The majority of artwork depicted the touhous flat chested or with modest bust. Only in the recent years did all that cow udder art appear. The apparent age went from what was supposed to be 12-15 teens to 20 year old and middle aged women.
