They ruined him in The New 52. They basically did the whole "LOL WEREN'T OLD COMICS SO CAMP AND SILLY" thing and retconned him to be a hardcore bad dude. The first issue started with someone making fun of him and asking if he'd seen some YouTube videos. Then Aquaman gets mad because he can't talk to fish any more so he hits the guy and leaves (or something like that). It's GRITTY and REALISTIC.
