I think one of the reasons people on /jp/ get so many reviews is because they press "hard" on all of their cards to make them come back sooner because they aren't confident SRS will work.

>> No.10205041

>>10204868
I mean, as the number of cards you are studying increases, so will your number of reviews, but those cards should be maturing and the intervals between reviewing them should be increasing by larger and larger spans, so your reviews should be kept manageable. That is part of the use of SRS, to memorize large amounts of information and move it into your long term memory in a manageable way. Keeping your cards from maturing in order to study thousands of cards every single day is defeating the purpose of what SRS is supposed to do and likely won't yield any benefit since SRS will already move things into your long term memory via spacing effect.

You don't need to do it. Researchers have proven SRS to work.

Are the default spacing settings on most public decks really that good, though?
Like the poster above mentioned, it's hard to be confident when you get to the ~month mark. I, for one, don't feel secure about letting things I don't firmly remember go beyond that point. Much less 2 months for anything.
Should one let go and believe in the srs? Is it normal to fail cards often? I know it depends on the nature of the cards, but say it's vocab. Is it normal to have a, say, ~60-70% retention rate for non-new cards if you press the green button when it's not really that hard?

>Are the default spacing settings on most public decks really that good, though?

I don't think decks have their own spacing settings. The default Anki settings (10 minutes, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, etc.) works well for me. But I have something more to say about this at the end of my post.

>Like the poster above mentioned, it's hard to be confident when you get to the ~month mark. I, for one, don't feel secure about letting things I don't firmly remember go beyond that point. Much less 2 months for anything.

I understand, but once you get to a certain point you will be spending more time reviewing than applying the knowledge you are obtaining. If something is in your long term memory it does not need to be reviewed every month. And like I said it defeats the point of SRS.

>Should one let go and believe in the srs?

I think it's safe to trust the research. If for whatever reason it doesn't work for you it shouldn't take that long to find out.

>Is it normal to fail cards often? I know it depends on the nature of the cards, but say it's vocab. Is it normal to have a, say, ~60-70% retention rate for non-new cards if you press the green button when it's not really that hard?

A good goal to aim for is 90% retention. Perhaps the cards aren't sticking well for some flaw in your studying plan.

I think that Anki has one problem in its default settings, and that is that it skips from 10 minutes to 1 day. It does not have an x hours interval. When I grinded through kanji with Anki, I would learn each kanji, then put them into Anki about two hours later, in order to add another interval. I think this helped fill the gap and let me recall them better.

>>10205234
It may have changed in anki 2, or maybe it was different before, but in 1.2.8 each deck has its own set of settings.
As for it skipping till the next day, you can disable "per-day scheduling" and set the initial delay to less than a day. I think that'll let you delay by a few hours.

There isn't a "restore default" button or something?

But anyway, I think adding that extra interval before the 1 day interval helps solidify things some more in your head. Going straight to one day may be too big of a jump at first and the card may not get grounded well. That's just my guess though.

Most people dont realize by letting something fall into the back of your memory and then struggling and actually remembering it solidifies it in your long term memory. Also by spreading it out you can learn which kanji you actually need help with. If you keep choosing the lowest setting easy kanji will get the same priority as difficult kanji. By the time your at the end the only reviews you should have is kanji you have trouble with and mature well known kanji should only pop up once a month or so just to test you.

>> No.10205420

I have the opposite problem of clicking "hard" on every kanji. I have to click "good" on every card even if I forget it. But I write it down afterwords and review it the next day so it still works and I remember it on the next review.

...Why? That seems pretty counter-productive.

I press "Again" if I fucked it up, "Hard" if it took me a while, "Good" if I got it after some deliberation, "Easy" basically never but I use it if I ever got something the damn near instant it appears, so shit like 一 and 人. You know, real easy bullshit like that,

In Anki 2, you can have as many steps as you want before a new card becomes a review card.

I can't remember all these conjugations and different grammar rules/situations. I have to continuously look back at the grammar guide while trying to 'read' stuff. I'm so frustrated right now that even fapping won't help me since most likely I will be looking back at the grammar guide because I forgot something again.

If I could trade 3000 vocab words for fully understanding all the grammar I would.
