I just bought Mk2 and have yet to start.
I got the additional characters DLC because I had left over money in my PSN wallet from when I bought something.

Heard it's muhc better than the first, and I liked it, can't wait for V.

I'm playing mk2 now, and have 3 questions.

1. Are Intellect related stats useless now on characters that aren't gust? Almost every attack IF, Nepgear, Compa and Nisa have seem to be melee.

2. Is the ability to activate HDD mode determined on SP, AP or both? Because at time I never seem to be able to activate it.

3. On certain boss fights almost all characters that aren't HDD Nepgear do little to no damage, even with EX combos. The only attacks that do any damage seem to be IF's holy magic and Gust's Words that both cost 50 SP.

HDD costs 100 SP to activate and 15 SP at the end the character's turn to maintain, if you don't have 15 SP available the character will return to normal.

Generally HDD mode isn't worth the SP cost, it's much more effective to just spend it on abilities.

Some bosses like the Killachines have very high defense against physical attacks so magic attacks (nearly all of which are SP abilities for everyone who isn't Gust) should work much better. I think there were some bosses that had a bigger difference in damage taken with Guard Break than usual but nothing that should be insurmountable without going for Guard Break.

Nah, Nep V isn't as big a step up from mk2 as mk2 was from the first game.

Nep V is basically mk2, but with more characters and a lot more DLC. The game system is basically unchanged.

Also, CH sure is shit at balancing HDD form.

First game: As soon as you can transform, do it and do it every battle for the whole battle.

Second game: Don't even bother unless it's a boss battle and even then it might not be worth it

Third game: Transform every single battle again.

Buy NepV by all means, but if you want an actual honestly great game, make sure to grab Atelier Ayesha too.

People don't believe me when I say this, but I actually enjoyed the first game more.

While it's undeniable the second game gave a much needed improvement to the combat system, it still was extremely basic, far too easy and overall just... not fun. Better, sure, but hardly good.

Where the original game is better though is in characters and humor department. The original goddesses just had so much more personality to them and the cutscenes were always (or at least, usually) fun to watch, whereas I got tired of Nepgear's "oh no, we can't win!" "yes we can Nep-Nep, with the power of FRIENDSHIP" act in the second game less than halfway through it.

The first game was largely a visual novel, with some bad RPG elements thrown in. The second game tried to be more of a standard RPG, but still wasn't very good at it, and had a far less likable cast of characters and cutscenes.

Neptunia's characters were just a bunch of typical archetypes with the typical jokes attached to them like the obligatory boob jokes. I admit some video game references were clever but most are just downright bad like when you just have 2 talking heads going: "oh look 2 hoodlums beating up a car. why would they do that?" GIT IT?????
Most jokes also fall flat due to the fact they were to goddamn lazy to make character portraits for the NPC's.

At least mk2 was a mediocre JRPG. It was at least better than Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

I really didn't like the humor in the first game, it basically always boiled down to just a reference, no actual jokes nothing. It almost never went further than simply appealing to a sense of being in the know-how, that is Big Bang Theory-level writing. Also, most of the fun characters hardly get any screentime. Does anyone actually like IF or Compa?
The second game was much better because it was more serious in tone. Even though the dialog was extremely cliche, the jokes felt more fresh as it wasn't just a continuous stream of silliness and their quality was certainly higher as the writers didn't have to write a gazillion of 'em. That's why having Nepgear as the main focus also worked better than Neptune did, goofball characters are better in smaller doses.
Me being an edgy faggot who likes grimdark and suffering, I also really enjoyed the Ruler Ending and the overall darker atmosphere throughout the game. The contrast created by it really makes you appreciate the cute scenes that much more. It was genuinely artistic of them, which surprised me as the rest of the series seems to play it very safe pandering to the otaku crowd. Though I guess you could be cynical about it and say they were just playing up to the Madoka hype. Here's to hoping V continues their trend of improvement at least.

Honestly I blame part of that on NISA's heavily localised script that they always seem to use. They'll stuff in memes and shitty terminology just to make things 'funny', it honestly makes me wish they'd stop butchering the script so much.

Star Ocean 4 had an enjoyable battle system and if you were lucky enough to get the PS3 version of the game you didn't have to listen to the horrible dub either so the game at least becomes half decent.

I had the PS3 version. I traded it in when i got stuck at the part where the world becomes black and white.
The characters were just too annoying to deal with. They were too cliche'd and the graphics had this uncanny valley feel to them.
Even the goddamn starship shop NPC seemed to be designed to punish you for trying to craft something by annoying you to death.
For the rest the game just felt very poorly thought out gameplay wise.

The characters are a lot more annoying when they're English dubbed so be glad you got Japanese audio at least. Personally I only liked 2 or 3 characters in the whole game and thought it to be rather mediocre as you said but the combat system is really enjoyable so if you can stomach the horrible story/characters it's not a terrible game, especially since you can pick it up for stupidly cheap now. It was a day 1 purchase for me on the 360. I regret that decision considerably.
