Is there any reason why fan made 2hu personalities get way more popular than canon ones?
I mean, just look at Kaguya.
There are people who actually think she's a hikkiNEET who spends all day playing videogames.
Why do certain personalities/traits get more popular than others?
Is it a specific thing that makes it that way?
Elitism? A specific popular doujin/shi?

Elitism has nothing to do with that. It's just that the Touhou fanbase is so big, they need to fill the characters that don't have developed personalities, and then they use their creativity to create personalities for specific characters that suit them.

Because it's memetic, likeable, and people agree with the reason. In Kaguya's case, she kept to herself in one house for hundreds of years. It makes sense that she could be portrayed as a NEET. Even ZUN isn't above comical portrayals and stereotypes of characters.

There are more fandom content than actual canon content, that's why fandom is more popular. Pretty sure that a high porcentage of people get into touhou because of the fandom, even if they actually play the games later.
