Both are a mess. Regardless of what they were when they started, they've grown to make no sense over time. Buddhism seems to have absorbed hindu gods one way or another, and in japan buddhism and shintoism existing side by side was explained something like shinto spirits being manifestations of buddhist dieties and such.
Read the tao te ching once. I was impressed with the book, and thought the philosophy was good. However wikipedia leads me to believe that it's grown to include silly traditions, rituals and other unnecessary things.
In the end having a personal religion or philosophy is going to be more useful than a shared one with compromises made and useless complications added.
