Are you using any primer, anon? Otherwise your paint may rub and flake off at a later date. I'd suggest using masking tape for details like the stripes too, so you can get nice crisp edges. It really helps, especially if you're like me and have kinda shaky hands. Otherwise, you have some really cute colors, dude. Post more pics when you get her finished!

I was thinking about getting this gk from e2046, but then I saw that they made an antihero version of the griffon patchouli, and i'm split because the sculpt for the griffon one isnt too bad, just the way they paint/decal the faces. So I cant decide between which patchy I want...I've got like 35 dollars of store cred just sitting there, too.

Yeah im using primer. some paint did flake off the back with primer and all. I guess thats a lesson in needing to clean the parts better... I tried masking the stripes but the tape was too broad and i was afraid of damaging the kit by cutting too deep or slipping.

Its my second and it already looks miles better than my first one. It feels pretty rewarding.

You could try this kit. Her clothes were kinda a pain to fit though. Lots of grinding was needed. I even had to grind down her butt to get the inner skirt to fit. i felt kinda bad doing that. ;_;

You can use a hot air gun or hairdryer to reshape the parts, resin is fun like that. as long as you dont get it too hot, there's no big issue. You just hold it to the new shape until it cools, and it stays like that. Doesnt take much heat at all, it helps for when pieces are warped and dont fit quite right. I wouldnt do it for HUGE adjustments though.

You can also cut the tape beforehand, then put it on the kit afterwards. There's also liquid masking paints you can get (they're mostly for watercolor painting on paper, you have to have a dedicated brush for it because the stuff does not come out of bristles) that work pretty well. They smell absolutely foul though.

Next time you wash it, scrub the parts down with a toothbrush and some soap (dish-soap is good for this, i've found) , so you can get into the cracks and folds. Wiping it down with a small amount of rubbing alcohol with a q-tip and cotton ball helps get off any residue, too.

All this talk of gks reminds me I need to make a stand for barasuishou, she's tipped over twice and snapped off her fingers and snapped her backribbon. Luckily I fixed them, but I still need to make her a proper stand so she doesnt keep taking all these damn falls.

So tempting to get that patchy though, hnn.

I actually tried that and it did help a little but i still had to grind down the body part and clamp it down with allot of force when gluing.

i got the liquid masking stuff. I mostly use it for small parts since its less hassle than tape in most cases. But it was too runny for the stripes. Its nasty stuff indeed but you can clean the brush by soaking it in white spirit for a while.

And fuck. I figured i'd pre-dilute the entire bottle of matte coating with colour-mix so i dont have to mix small amounts everytime. Only to have it cause some chemical reaction and turn into a gooey sperm like mess the next day.
Than i find out my other coating from a DIY store was glossier than i thought. Oh well, the hat came out fine otherwise.

Barasuishou looks really good. Did you mix in a metallic paint? Its a neat effect.

Personally i look forward to this kit when im done with Patchy: http://www.e2046.com/product/16513

Oh dear, I guess it was incredibly warped then, thats no good. I hate having to sand/modify a piece, since you cant un-do it incase you've just got it aligned wrong, etc. It makes me nervous.

She ended up very cute, anon~ she has such cute feet and ribbons, you're making me want to take home my own little bookworm for assembly~ I'm getting all excited~

I dont know what happened to your matte coating, maybe diluting it caused it to start curing itself in the bottle? thats definitely weird.

I should probably try the spirit thing then , I was prettymuch just attempting to rush to get it out of the brush before it dried, then softly rolling out the leftover sticky bits. And with that stuff, I was kind of hesitant to use any sort of thinner, since it might cause some horrid reaction and kill me through my nose.

For bara's clothes, I wanted a more silken and textured look, that would go well with gloss but wouldnt end up with a mirror polish, so I started out with my base coats of just clean color (acrylic), then added an iridescent medium with some subsequent coats, did a little dry brushing with some colors to get the gradient to stand out some more, then sealed it all with high-gloss. Her skin is matte (except the hands, I kinda messed up on that part, between that and snapping her fingers off when she tipped over and having to do a repair, they're not very pretty at all ;_; ), and I mostly used watercolor paints (thinned with rubbing alcohol) and spray-matte for her face and skin and hair to keep the softer look. I did high-gloss the eyes, so they look somewhat glasslike. The crystals are all a LOT of layers of gloss, you can almost see reflections in the sword ;_;

With patchy's dress its not so bad since the parts you need to grind are covered up and even if you grind off to much you can just apply extra epoxy to fill the space. But i know what you mean.
Your kit might fit better though.

The weird thing is that Aqua color mix also acts as extender medium so it should have had the opposite effect.
I did some searching and apparently it sometimes happens for unknown reasons with this stuff.

She came out really nice. Shame about the fingers though. What did you use for drybrushing?

just some cheap, stiff brush I had..ahh, Its almost like a reed brush? I'm not too sure what the material is, since I just found it mysteriously in my art cabinet one day with no recollection of buying it. Its a pretty cheap material; almost like the kind of brushes you get for painting houses, but on an artist scale.
Anyways, I used that and just some acrylic paint that I mixed with a little of the iridescent medium then blotted the brush on some cloth to dry. Mostly so I could get more the texture of silk instead of the texture of satin(*), because seeing as silk is the more expensive and high-quality product, I'd assume a rozen maiden(even if an imitation) would be more likely to be clothed in that vs a cheaper fabric.

(*Silk is more textured, and more shimmery because the thread itself makes prisms, satin is more glossy and smooth because of the way its threaded)

e2046.com has them. If its not in stock, it will usually take months to get back in stock, but the in-stock things ship and arrive pretty quickly. they're the most reliable recast store I know of.

If the original figure was poorly made, the recast is going to be poor, but if the original cast was good, then the figure will be good. Usually. I've only had one bad cast out of five figures, and it was a figma-scale deal with 86 parts. and even then, its only the stupid tiny detail parts that had issues, and I can resculpt or improvise for those with minimal effort.

Their ori line is usually pretty good from what i've seen.

I'd recommend getting a figure with only 6 or so parts for your first time, since there's a lot to learn, about cleaning, preparing, priming, pinning, painting, modifying, etc. and having 32 parts to keep track of while learning the ropes is no fun at all.

It takes some hard work, but you'll end up with a self-built figure you can sit on your shelf and be proud of.

I used to be an avid miniature painter and modeler of their miniatures. I stopped about 7 months ago, not really sure why. Would like to it again.

That's besides the point, though.

I have experience with cleaning of molding fluids, flash and mold lines, pinning for secure bonds, painting and converting (modifying).

Overall, prize figures have gotten much better in the past couple years.

I've also found that sometimes I feel more satisfied getting (high quality) prize figures of a large cast of characters from a show or game, rather than just an expensive one of the main character.

It depends on the prize figure, though. I lurk Futaba a lot, because they post a lot of shots of lower end jobs that actually turned out really nice. You'd be surprised. Sometimes Sega, Furyu, and even Taito can really surprise you.

It's not supposed to be removable, and thus damage occurs. The figure is not a cast-offable figure; it's not made to do that. This doesn't stop people from forcibly removing the clothes anyhow, though.

I have a question. Did your interest in figures become serious when you starting having disposable income, or while you were still poor? I feel like if I start becoming interested in them while I'm poor, I'll become consumed and bitter.

I'm always curious how you all manage to drop hundreds of dollars on figures. I guess it's just called stability?

I just stumbled upon picture related one day and just had to have it. From there on i collected other figs so far my budget allowed.

My interest is kinda waning lately due to the lack of "HOLY SHIT THATS AWESOME" figs like Dizzy Alter lately. The disappointment that was Racing Miku 2011 did not help much either.

The quality is just plain bad. There are nasty looking seam lines on the hair. Pic is not mine but my copy has one like that too. Mine also has black specks on the hair. Also sanding scratches visible on the transparent parts like they were not polished properly.

The hair is also ridiculously glossy. It looks very unnatural. The base looks pretty tacky too IMO.
For the rest its a decent fig but compared to the prototype the final version looks *very* underwhelming.

For awhile I was really crazy about getting figures and I'd burn a hole in my pocket getting them. Now I'm pretty indifferent and I'll only invest in a figure I really like. I'm already considering selling some, like Griffon Flan and Plum Erio. And done for now.

Lessons learned this build:

-Dremels are awesome
-Dilute your damn clearcoat properly unless you want your airbrush to spit chunks.
-Be more generous with primer.
-Some paint brands are shit for airbrushing.
-Steel HDD platters make excellent bases.
-Check the example pic better so you dont assemble and paint the hat backwards.
-Dont drop the hat and break the ribbons.
-Dont start working with slow drying epoxy glue if you dont have any glue clamps.

All in all it was a fun build.

Sup guys, this Nendoroid Reimu is my first figure. I bought it for $280 pesos at a local con in Guadalajara.

Luckily it had two heads (the other one has a neutral expression), because me being a noob at figures I snapped the neck while unboxing it. I managed to get out the stub from the neck and snap the hair into the second head, all of that in the short time I had before taking off to work.

Question: can I use cyanoacrylate to fix this PVC figure? And, seeing as taking off the packaging tape without damaging the figure is indeed really hard, would you recommend investing in an X-Acto knife to do it with more precision?

What i did was take an old HDD platter, primed it twice, made it purple and applied 4 coats of clear coat. Then Stacked the books in such a way they kinda interconnect to distribute the weight.

Then i drilled a hole in the bottom of the plate to drive a small screw in the pile of books (make sure to predrill a big enough hole for the screw in the books unless you want them to split apart.) with the support rod so the screw would take most of the weight just in case.

It took me a while to figure it out but so far she shows no signs of toppling over.
The books come with the kit but you get no rod. I made mine out of an old hairpin.

Good luck with your kit and be sure to post some pics when your done as well.

Film is fun to use, but so is digital. With digital I don't really worry much about getting it right in one shot, so I can keep trying until I get one that I like. You obviously can't do that with film, so you have to really think about it to get it right, but that unknown factor does make it more exciting, especially if you develop the film yourself which can be cheaper in the long run. Can't really help the battery though, but I think I remember people saying that you had to leave the dial on a certain spot or else it would drain the battery quickly.
There are FD adapters that allow you to use them on newer mounts, but I don't think they work that well with the K mount. I think your best bet would be to just use the A-1.

So eariler this morning I got around to unboxing my Black Rock Shooter figma.

I had an X-Acto knife this time just to be prepared in case I had to cut through lots of adhesive tape like that goddamn Nendoroid Reimu. Surprisingly, this time I had to cut through very little tape (though that X-Acto was p. handy when opening the stands' bag, and it will come in handy again in the future). Putting it on its base was also much easier than that Nendoroid, and I even took a little bit of time to give it a nice pose before taking off to work again.

Included was a set of clenched hands in order to hold her sword and her big-ass cannon, but I tried to remove her right hand and holy shit it was a bitch and a half. I was scared by that Nendoroid whose neck snapped with like zero effort whatsoever and thus I always ended up chickening out when I tried to pull its hand. Maybe it's a little sturdier and it takes more effort to pull the hand off? In any case, I'll probably leave it like that for now, maybe once I return home I'll try again.

And maybe I'll also get some flat-tipped pliers, my parents use mine all the time and I never know where they left them. Not normal pliers, that would leave a nasty-ass mark on the plastic.

No figure pictures released yet, but they will be doing one based on the Remilia on that picture. Supposedly.

...is that a white dress I see there? And the wings are as long as they should be?

Oh god yes, finally. brb looking for a job so I can actually afford both of these.

>>10203222
I actually don't like this one at all. Between the colors, the face, and the post, nothing really appeals to me.

I'll take my chances until they disappoint me. the only figure I've been somewhat dissatisfied with was non-Griffon made.

Well, seeing how Yuuka ended to be, I think I prefer T's system's Remi.

I actually ordered a QUALITY Homu. Guess it's better than nothing while I wait for someone who knows what they're doing (start on it you Gift bastards) makes one or I find a commission artist I like.

Got mine the other day. I knew she'd be small but she's even smaller than expected. She's precious though. But I honestly don't like the pink panties. Black or white would've been better.

Funny you mention both Banpresto and Gift.
I was trying to decide on which of these to get, so I got the banpresto one, with the summer uniform and I'm getting the gift one that's in the picture.

I've been repeatedly disappointed by Banpresto figs in the past and don't expect much from inbred Homu. To be fair it was at a lower price point than Nendo Plus and fumos. Oh well, will be making sure the stuffing isn't filled with hazardous waste when I try to mod the Mami to have a detachable head and body cavity for storing stuff.
