Hah. I have over 200 of those papers, written in the tiniest of script, on the margins with no whitespace between characters, on both sides.

Yet I've forgotten how to recall and write out of memory, the majority of kanji.

It wasn't all a waste of time though. It made it much more fun and easier (albeit time consuming) to memorize kanji, and it did godly for my handwriting. You just gotta practice forever if you wanna be able to recall kanji from memory.

>> No.10155665

>Yet I've forgotten how to recall and write out of memory, the majority of kanji.
That's impossible for me. I can recognize most of the 500 kanji I've learned, but recalling and writing them, I just can't do.
Well, actually it's the same for everything with me. If asked to list some books I've read, I'd have serious problems, but answering if I have or haven't read a certain book is easy.

Somebody should do a guide like "Japanese for gaming".

It would cover all the recurring kanji for shit like points or enemies or kill that appear in say, old NES games or in the HUD of newer games. Naturally, it wouldn't go into grammar territory unless it was for some reason necessary, not that I can think of one.

I'd read it, anyway. In fact, I might even do it myself.

It's somewhat inefficient because you can end up looking up the same kanji many times because you've forgotten it, but frequently you can remember from context. I want to be able to play a few untranslated games (Yakuza Kenzan, Yakuza 5) but that's it. Unless there's a ton of other good untranslated games that I don't know about which aren't visual novels then I have trouble justifying the idea of spending two years learning a language to play two games.

Just read through it once or twice, and check back some of the complex chapters a few more times. In my opinion that's the single part you need the MOST motivation for - sure the rest takes much more time, but the beginning, just learning all those weird squiggles is the most important.

Most people are aware that it's just the tip of the iceberg, so if they feel like it's hard they're going to be most likely to give up completely.

Once you've learned kana, even if you know nothing else, the feeling when you first time look at a picture or a manga page with, say, sound effects in Japanese, and can actually read them, is often enough motivation for people to keep going for a while after.

>> No.10169390

No, it's not necessary at all. I hadn't heard of Namasensei before after I had learned the Kana.

It's very simple and there's only 92 of them. Just write each of them until you memorize it, then review until you're able to recall every single one. Cut up into sizable chunks as necessary.

This should be obvious if you've ever memorized something. I've never understood all the fuzz around learning the Kana. Now, kanji is something to fuzz about.

Didn't work for me. I learned kana without difficulties a year ago, but got demotivated by the amount of kanji and the difficulties I had memorizing them.
I used a textbook that time, now I'm going to try again with Tae Kim's guide. Still scared by kanji, though.

Another question: where can I find a lot of simple texts to practice reading? It's much easier for me to memorize new words this way.

>> No.10169433

>Downloaded the RTK 1+3 deck. Where are the readings?

RTK1 teaches the meanings and writings of the jouyou kanji
RTK2 teaches the readings of the jouyou kanji
RTK3 teaches the meanings and writings of more advanced kanji

So there won't be any readings. If you're going to use Heisig you should go through the book and not just use the deck. Most people skip RTK2 and learn the readings through vocab since RTK2 is rather.. uh, well just look at it and I'm sure you'll understand.

If you don't intend to go through the RTK book you might as well get a different deck.

The Core 2000 and Core 6000 decks have vocab, with audio recordings, and example sentences, with audio recordings. If you want the ones with the audio already built int download the decks named Japanese Core 2000 Step 01 or something like that. It's the ones divided into steps.

I will say though that if kanji are giving you a lot of trouble, then Heisig is probably your best resource. The guy is a miracle worker. Not memorizing readings at the same time will also lighten the load and make it easier. Divide and conquer, basically. If you end up doing it try to get through it quickly, though, since it doesn't teach kanji in frequency order, but the order that will be easiest to learn them, so it may not carry direct results into your other studies until you're finished.

okay, looks like there is a misunderstanding on your part

Kanji is composed of four parts
1. How it looks-in this case it's 水
2. What it means-in this case, it's "water"
3. How you read it in kun yomi-in this case, it's みず
4. How you read it in on yomi-in this case, it's すい

Learning kanji means learning all of the points above
you can't skip any of them. knowing how to write it is useless if you don't know what it means, and knowing what it means is useless if you don't know how to read it since meaning usually changed depending on how it is read.

No, it does not teach you vocabulary, unless you go through the jukugo section of every kanji, which I wouldn't recommend doing before you know most of it.

The best option would be grinding through the Core decks. I'm using the anki deck JapaneseCorePlus and it has all vocab from JLPT1-5 along with everything from the Core decks. Has around 25k words.

I'd recommend doing this deck after you've covered the most basic shit though, like JLPT4-5 vocab.

The onyomi aids a lot in both memorization and recognition of kanji, some say it's useless but I wouldn't agree on that. I can average 100 words+ almost every day because of this, while the people skipping it probably has it harder than me, and this is something I, myself has discovered whenever I encounter compounds that are FPed(fucked pronounciation) I usually have to spend some time on them before I get them.
