Are there any ROM hacks that get the design of the original game? Obviously the original level creators had rules or at least rough guidelines on how certain blocks are used or where, but every ROM back I've played does something shitty like relying on a glitch or misusing a block. The worst offender is adding a "fake" block. That's not challenging, just stupid. I think they might have actually done that once in SMW in which case fuck you Nintendo for enabling it.
