One of the projects writers stated his intent was to purposely make the plot confusing. They fucked up the promise of the ideas by doing this, and ended up poorly integrating plot elements into an endless string of knee-jerks without punchline.

But of course viewers are just supposed to bow down before whatever the godlike omnipotent being who did lain decided to shit out. Because the seckrit author code of internal narrative consistency actually trumps any debate about execution
