You really only need the game, which is under 2gb. If you don't like it, or have any desire to try your hand at animating in MMD, then there's no reason to download mods.

The modfiles are (mostly) uncompressed 3D modeling data, so they can add up.

You don't really need a metric fuck-ton of effects for your images to look good. Diffusion, SSAO, DOF, and maybe True Camera are enough, along with some Photoshoppan.

Not the guy you were talking to but, which versions of Diffusion and SSAO are the best? I have like 4, and maybe even as many as 6 separate versions of Diffusion and some of them to appear to do things differently rather than just "better" than others, so it's somewhat confusing which one I should be using. The latest version I have is Diffusion7, and I'm not sure what version of SSAO's I have but it's definitely not recent.

I don't have DOF or True Camera so I guess I'll try out whatever versions of them I can find using google.

And what about model specific effects? Are there any model specific effects that are usually worth using or work well with certain global effects? I always thought "Brushed" looked good on some textured models I've been using lately.

If we are really good with MMM and MMD, is it possible that we might get requests and actually be paid for doing the things we love? Also, what's the best place to release images created with MMM and MMD that's not 4chan.

I use the diffusion and SSAO that came with the stage in this picture. I can't really answer your question about model effects that work with global effects, but I do know the effect I used on this model (full simple soft shadow) works with AutoLuminous.

No. You're doing it a little wrong. It's supposed to blur everything at a distance from your focus(Miku) and also applies motion blur. Attach it to Miku's head so it does not blur Miku.

That's correct. The blur is a little weak, but how strong you want to blur it is up to your philosophy. Just mess with the settings until you find something you like.

overall-bad SSAO. in default, SSAO will leave a shadow aura around objects very often, so adjust parameter(rad). overuse of the diffusion effect is also bad. don't forget good draw order. i am sorry to say, but i also find using bad or low poly models gives an amateur impression, but this is just me...

techniques-look up "contrapposto" and related concepts. move every bone. check poses you make with your own body. someone else said already, but posing hair, skirt, and fingers can make a difference in your picture. add an upper body 2(上半身2) bone if your model does not have, it is essential for many things.

technology-what kind of 3d do you want? for strong "3d look," there are good effects like BeamMan's mechanic2 shader and recent MassLight shader. soboro's autoluminous2(or truecameraLX) are necessity, but it is complex so study. soboro's PMDEditor plugin, SemiStandardBones is useful for adding several kinds of bones like upper body 2.

I don't like MMD's gravity. The affected bones don't end up where I like them. Also, there's a much higher chance of surfaces crossing where they aren't supposed to.

i didn't mean to say you were, but it is a common mistake. it doesn't look like you are using normal maps, and without normal maps, GotaSh is just a softlight shader, so maybe you are not...

i meant models, but it can matter with effects too. please try googling it, but in short, a model with transparency must be drawn after the models behind it in order for transparency to work. for effects, sometime it matters, sometime it doesn't.

i think if you research from contrapposto and look up skeleton limitations you will have plenty to study. sorry, i really just don't want to write a lot here... but, if you want something interesting, try downloading the newest DonDon Miku. it is a good/best example of an advanced rig in MMD, by far, and may show you how important advanced bones can be.

by "softshadow" are you referring to the ground shadow effect i recommended? if the ground shadow is visible, it makes a very big difference to my eye. MMD's default ground shadow is not good at all...

if you mean general shadow softening, details matter less with distance, yes. i'm not going to tell you to make sure everything is perfectly blurred, as long as there aren't obvious sharp or jagged shadows it is OK. natural shadows blur quite a bit, so it is important.

i remember softlightshader has a soft shadow and mipmap effect... other than that, look for either SS_MipA_SC.zip or mip_SoftShadow.zip on BeamMan's first uploader.

for now, if you download everything on soboro and beamman's pages, you will have most of what i would say.

for special effects, autoluminous2 is important. but it is hard to understand. godray, fog, and postpointlight, XDOF and MotionBlur2(or TrueCameraLX; it has AL2, XDOF, and MB2) can be important. mirrorWF and the new RealtimeLocalReflections are good.

for 2d look, ToonDX, NewToon, softlight shader, AbsoluteShadow, ExcellentShadow, MultiEdge, GotaSh(?)

for 3d, Figure shader, Half-Lambert shader, Mechanic2, GotaSh, post adult shader, NCHL shader, and MassLight
learning how to normal map is the biggest step in strengthening 3d look.

MMM has many functions better than MMD. multi track camera, motion layering, interpolation curves for expressions, etc.

but it does not have as many effects, has bugs, and is heavier on your computer. so there is a trade-off.

many effects have mipmapping and softshadow by default, like GotaSh. so, you may not have to use a separate effect just for that.

also, there is an important difference between GotaSh and Mechanic2 shaders. Mechanic2 does not have mipmapping. this means that it is bad on some objects that are far away.

I tested out MMM. It has issues with many effects and models that you have to do some tweaking to fix. Even though MMM's interface is a lot better and not retarded-looking, I think I'll stick to MMD for compatibility and effects...

Just bug fixes really. The idea of keeping the package under a gig hasn't changed so far as I know (not that it's a relevant number anymore since megaupload died). For example, the BDSM mod included in the jp modpack is a complete clusterfuck, and most parts don't even show due to missing dependencies.

Just the bodies, and anything that happened to come with them. I'm fairly confident I have most of those. WAY too much clothing to try and release as a pack, folks can search the mod list for what they want there. Like I said, I might include some string swimwear because I like it. I recommend the version under the 1.3 header. It's capable of multiple models and compatible with most effects (x64 is not).

Getting models for MMD (MikuMikuDance, .pmd or .pmx) to 3DCG is difficult, or at least it was last I tried. However, converting 3DCG models (.png hardsaves) to MMD is incredibly easy. If you have any desire to customize MMD models I recommend you don't rule out 3DCG, if you're only looking to play with other folks models you don't need it at all.

I personally have absolutely no need for any models but these last couple of threads have left a bad taste in my mouth and I can understand the frustration that a lot of people have been expressing lately. I've already done my part in the 3DCG and MMD community a long time ago and I had absolutely no problem sharing models, even ones that I made and put a lot of effort into making. I was happy to share models I made or liked with other people because that would mean I'd get to see more videos of them that I wouldn't have had to make myself otherwise. And if the reason you won't share them is because you're afraid of your model becoming whored out to almost every 12 year old entry level MMD user that'll make shitty videos with them, that's likely not going to happen. It's not as if this is deviantart where most of that goes on anyway.

In short, stop being pricks and cooperate with each other. I have been a long time contributor here and other places like Hongfire and Voile and you'd be surprised at how many people learn to respect your work and return the favor back to you and the community.
