This whole discussion about how humans define what exists is interesting. We could be wrong about some aspect of history, but it's the "truth" to us. It's a matter of style. In Latin ridiculously long sentences are the norm in literature, and older English writing mimics this. Take a look at the Declaration of Independence for a not-particularly-extreme example of this.
