Just finished watching Kekkon Dekinai Otoko. What a great series that was, I recommend it for anyone looking for a good Japanese TV show.

Is there a list of recommended Japanese shows? I'm itching to watch another one, but it's hard to narrow down which ones I should watch.

Another show I recommend for everyone to watch is Hitotsu Yane no Shita. It's from the 90s, and one of my favorites.

I've also seen:

Gokusen
Densha Otoko
Crows

Romance is good. But I'm up for anything, really. I remember seeing a recommendation chart around here, but I didn't get a chance to save it.

not Liar Game, it's shit. Watch some toku like Kamen Rider OOO or Akibaranger.

Can someone recommend me a comedy or at least not-so-depressing series?

I'm well acquainted with toku. I didn't like OOO, but I loved Kuuga, Agito and W as far as Kamen Rider goes. Akibaranger was very good too.

Starring Abe Hiroshi and a bunch of other big name actors. Directed by Koreeda Hirokazu who usually directs feature length movies so you can expect a more refined dorama experience.

Liar Game isn't Masterpiece Theatre or anything, but it's entertaining and has some good characters (and some GIANT hams who are also worth watching). plus dat Yasutaka Nakata soundtrack.

Some older classic series you might like:
- Tadaima is a good one that you might like if you enjoyed Hitotsu no Yane; stars Masayoshi Yamazaki who is great in family dramas. same with Kiseki no Hito/The Miracle Man.
- Joou no Kyoushitsu/The Queen's Classroom
- Dragon Zakura
- Waterboys (the movie is also good but for the love of god stay away from Waterboys 2)
- Gambatte Ikimmashoi
- Orange Days (pretty great; stars Kou Shibasaki)

more recent ones:
- Last Friends
- Namae wo Nakushita Megami (mama drama the series; soapy as hell, but pretty engrossing. will probably smash any fantasy you may have had about marrying and having kids with a Japanese woman into tiny jagged pieces though)
- Uta no Oniisan

Oh, and be warned that the ending REALLY pissed me off, as did the resolutions to one or two of the storylines. Didn't detract that much from my overall enjoyment of the show as a whole though.

Isn't this show all about single 20something (OLD MAID!!!!) female workaholic (ONI!!!!!!!!!1111) who has a career to worry about and no time to waste on guys who by the end of the series marries some dude and quits her job?

If execution is good it might be worth trying but if that summary is accurate it sounds like something I would be almost certainly unable to enjoy it.

Is Abe Hiroshi as big an asshole as in Kekkon Dekinai Otoko in his other roles as well? The humour resulting from that was what I liked most about the show.

>> No.10112789

>>10112740
Not really, it is about a 20-something female who's good and professional looking at her work, but at home she's a slacker or "dried-out woman", the boss finds out and that's where the story begins.

To drink tea with other little girls as we discuss otaku culture, of course.

Oh, since OP said romance suggestions and I was meaning to mention more, I liked Kimi wa Pet. It's awfully josei-manga-ish (that's what it was based on) but the leads have nice chemistry. It's a very fluffy, sweet show.

There was one called Maid in Akihabara. Never saw it and have no idea if it's good, but it definitely sounds relevant.

I'd like to see someone try making a dorama out of Genshiken.

I've seen Maid in Akihabara, while it was fairly amusing at times it's a very hit and miss type of show, some might enjoy it while others will not.

The episodes are very short so there's no reason not to try it.

Does anyone know one that is more on the serious side?

I find that any time Japanese drama deals with loners, social outcasts, or anything in a social gray area things lean towards really campy humor. I wouldn't mind watching something with the tone of kou kou kyoushi 2003 but with an otaku story line.
