This is exactly why I feel a desire to hate the EoSD cast. All of its fans are always shitting on all the other characters. There isn't a single Touhou game with more than one mediocre character.

EOSD cast is the failproof way to get people to buy your doujin/game, because even the shittiest fan knows at least some of those characters.

Scared that your doujin won't sell? Just make it a SakuyaXMeiling or SakuyaXRemilia doujin.

Scared that no one will care about your game? Just add every character from EOSD or just have he SDM cast playable.

Scared that no one will buy your remix CD? Just add a U.N. Owen Remix and maybe a Septette remix too.

I'd say it's closer than you think. With background and fanworks starting to come on, I'd put SA's cast on par with EoSD's and IN's, with UFO and XD not far behind.

All of them are just playing for second place behind PoFV anyway though.

New characters will always suffer from the fact that they were not around when IOSYS was at the height of their popularity. The new characters can be as unique as they want, but they will never get a huge popularity boost like the characters featured in IOSYS old videos.

Even as someone whose favorite group is the SDM, I can see and understand where you're coming from.

I think part of it is just that they're just so easy to work with as a group of characters. You've got a bunch of different archetypes, with all different kinds of interactions between them. The group as a whole is also independent enough that you can throw just about any situation at them (or vice versa) and come up with something or other.

It also takes a lot less effort on the part of the writer to create stories involving them. You don't have to know shit about Buddhism or ancient Japanese politics or folklore or ANYTHING. It's just a house owned by a Vampire and her various servants. Double this if the writer is from the west, where they're obviously a lot more likely to encounter the western vampire archetypes than pretty much anything else in Touhou.
