You can peruse all that media right now, a lot easier too, so you were born at a fortunate time and it's lucky you discovered Japanese pop culture when you did.

I know how you feel though, there are things I feel I missed out on as a kid. I would have loved to be a complete wapanese idiot instead of someone who just casually watched anime. Going to anime club, drawing fan comics on DeviantART, wearing poorly-made cosplay outfits, parroting the same five words of Japanese...that must have been great. I'd love to have done all that then grew up and realized what a moron I was. But now I'm already aware, so it's too late.

Actually the tough and inventive process of acquiring media is one of the things I feel like I missed out on. I doubt I would feel the same if I actually had to deal with it though. That and I would enjoy have enjoyed cosplay without having to feel like a creepy old man.

This is the fanzine that moot advertised on /jp/ a while back, if anyone remembers.

It's pretty interesting stuff, particularly the article on fanzines and the one on anime in the UK.
I actually still have a few mid-90s copies of Anime UK, and my old university kept record copies of their monthly sci-fi fanzine in the library. I wish I was more active in the anime "scene" but I was only about 13 at the time.

I still remember those stupid Manga Video intros. They were so cool when you were an impressionable teenager and stock rock music made everything more awesome.
