I think they might have taken on too many ideas and realized they couldn't fit it all neatly in one game so they rushed it the last half.

Xenogears was one of my favorite RPGs of the PS1, but I still have yet to finally beat the game. It's been so long, I think i might replay it again. But then I don't like the idea of slogging through disk 2 again.

Ironically the same thing happened with Xenosaga, as they were forced to resize their 6 episodes long project into 3 due to poor sales. But this time instead of having a shitty last chapter they made a masterpiece. Funny...

I think you should really try to finish Xenogears. I mean sure the second disk is rushed as fuck, but... that means it's also very short, come on! I have finished xenogears twice. You can do it.

Just follow a guide for the last dungeon since it's boring as fuck.

It took me two years to beat it the first time when I was in Jr. High. I got lost halfway through because I didn't listen to what Citan said on where to go when leaving Solaris, then I had to start over, then my PS died.

Unfortunately that will never happen, because the copyrights are shared between Square and the guys from Monolith.
The only thing you can do is playing it with a higher resolution and better filters in epsxe.- But that only works for the 3D parts and textures are still shitty.

Xenogears is still a masterpiece. I am really saddened that is forgotten because it has an absolutely fantastic story, a masterful soundtrack and great gameplay.

You can buy it for like $10 on PSN if you own a PS3 or Vita. Hey, it's friday. Might as well make it your weekend game.

I honestly enjoyed disk 2 just because it cut out the dungeon bullshit and let me dig into the story. I know on an intellectual level that, as a game, disk 2 is an abomination because it was basically the game equivalent of the last few episodes of Evangelion, but I couldn't help but feel slightly relieved that I could just flip some figurative pages and get to the plot

Good game overall though, even if a little hamfisted at points, which is to say basically the entire Billy arc. Seriously, firing his father as a bullet at the enemy? The entire church molestation thing? Just, goddamn

What makes it so good? Are you able to describe how it is without many spoilers? I ask because I heard that Xenosaga was supposed to be a good episode or two longer, so I always wrote the series off, assuming it suffered from bad budgeting syndrome, leading to a rushed end. Hearing that it actually wrapped up quite nicely makes me curious

The villain behind everything that happened in the first two games is revealed, and he explains absolutely everything. All the details come together nicely. Keep in mind every game is 25-30 hours long, so finally finding out the answer after such a long trip gave me a overwhelming feeling of accomplishment. And the best part: the ending is not overly simple or retarded like in most jrpgs (power of friendship, this is my final form etc)

It's hard to tell in a few words but I'll try:

1) The fact that basically 4 episodes got compressed into one turned out to be good because, unlike its predecessors, there's a lot of things happening in Xenosaga 3, a lot of plots and subplots unfolding which overal enrich the story to a level that you hardly see in other RPG. This also entails a lot of climatic moments that were meant to be the icying of the cake in several episodes. You get them all at once, and that's good, it's a non stop epic.
Maybe there are a few things that might seem to be rushed, but to be honest, I rarely felt that way.

2) The battle system and the level progression is finally done right. There might be nothing exceptional or original but it's good and enjoyable.

3) the OST is one of Yuki Kajura best works. She really outdid herself.

4) the character design has become a lot more refined. In the first episodes it is kinda awkward, it evolved a little in episode2, Episode3 perfectioned it.

Xenogears had an interesting story but the characters, gameplay, art, graphics, production and basically everything else was a total shitpile. Would have made an okay VN, though, and apparently they figured that out near the end.

I thought the mech combat was more tolerable than the regular combat specifically because it lacked combos. If you aren't chaining them together the regular combo system basically does the same amount of damage no matter what and just amounts to "mash five random buttons to attack every turn". It was pointless.

I bought all three episodes of Xenosaga intending to play through them in a marathon and couldn't even suffer through the first. Everything about the game was off-putting. The character designs, the voice-acting and dialogue, the slow combat, the "walk back and forth between these points for ten minutes with loud engine humming in the background". I've tried playing it at least four times and wander off every time after the first ten hours or so.

Well, duuuuuh. You should have known what you were getting into: insipid shounen characters, Nietzsche references and never-ending cutscenes. I can only imagine how much worse it is playing it in English without the benefit of professional Japanese voice actors to make the cutscenes more tolerable.

I found the cartoon cutscenes weird but enjoyable. Xenogears 15 years later is one of those games that is critically acclaimed but at the same time has a divided opinion.

That orchestral soundtrack they released is definitely worth checking out.

God damn, this was really the best jrpg ever.
Even it's combat was worth having random battles for.

They REALLY nailed the technical aspect in III. Also, Kajiura kind of outdid herself.
I have to say I don't regret playing through II (the battle system was painful, though), even if my attention capabilities are too poor to actually remember much of the story.
