Thanks for the rec, anon. The MC of this game looks pretty entertaining as well. Pathetic boys are too moe for their own good.

I haven't played through Persona 5 yet, but Akechi seemed like a lesser Adachi to me. The appeal of Adachi was him working a job he despised, him constantly acting frugal and meek, and his general manchild tendencies. When you have a character like Akechi, who is a charismatic teenage prodigy detective, I think you lose much of the bitter loser at a dead-end job charm that Adachi had. Also, funny that you mention ZTD, I was planning to play it after finishing AI and getting the urge to finally finish going through every Zero Escape game but I think even ZTD looked too much like a clusterfuck for me. What made me want to play it the most though were the characters, specifically Eric as you mentioned. He looked like my type (slight manchild tendencies, awkward-looking faces and gestures, etc). I haven't gone through BWS but it does look promising; I'm a bit of picky storyfag so hopefully the plot isn't as much of a disappointment as it was described last thread.

You make a good point: pathetic characters are obviously pathetic, so it's easy to look down on them, turn them into joke characters, or just be plain disgusted by them. And, when you combine patheticness with an unpleasant personality, I guess it's too much for most people to be able to actually "like" the character. Still though, I think there could be a mass-market appeal for these types of ugly and pathetic characters considering how many people love characters like Komaeda.

I'm interested in hearing your thoughts about it, anon. Like I said, I'm not too well versed in otome games, but this is probably one of the more unorthodox VNs I've played through, otome or otherwise. The ending with the main boy, Zaijyouin (picture related), is pretty conclusive, but as one reviewer says: no matter which ending you read, it leaves a slightly bad aftertaste, which is a compliment considering that it's an utsuge.

Who is going to eye fuck in VN for otaku? They demand girls to be psychically perfect there.

Lapis is sort of inconsistent and better in some routes than others, and I can't recommend the whole game in good conscience, but I really liked her dynamic with Ruu and the whole last route. The whole thing stank of "canon" route but I thought it was nice they didn't hold back and make him a super safe and generic character like most main boys, and it avoids the usual issue of him losing screentime to the plot by having the plot be directly related to and very dependent on his unhinged ass. Less goofy action setpieces and more long dramatic mental breakdowns, which I was a big fan of.
The game also gets extra points for featuring a literal autistic retard route. Now that's what I call brave.

Which bl even have good romance? Apart from Hashihime, Mebiusline, and Shingakkou since those seem to be /blog's favorite titles.

>>25349844
I don't think the issue is that the guys don't enjoy the gay sex, it's that Parade's games lack romance. But RN9 felt a bit more emotionally intimate in comparison to NTY, so maybe (hopefully) Lkyt is a bigger shift from NTY.

The moment after seiji fails at killing and daichi promises in his heart he'll be there with him no matter how low they'll fall was as close as it got. It's noted in their character descriptions and shown ingame how stubborn men they could be; they couldn't even verbally confirm to the other that they're their bff it was too embarrassing. A whole love confession is too weird and painful and gay and having sex is easier than admitting homoromanticism for someone you wanted to just preserve a platonic love with.

ZTD's no 999 of course, but its characters were interesting, so definitely give it a go. Eric is great, and the game's not that long anyway. And regarding Komaeda, I think he was riding some kind of Ryou/Kaworu-ish wave and adding a twist. Like, he's still good looking in canon, and while he's creepy and eccentric, his vaguely threatening aura stops him from seeming pathetic and really having him fit into our category. But it's been a while since I've played SDR2, and I'm not really sure I have the time or desire to replay. I think his popularity can also be attributed to the homolust, same with the other two, which wouldn't run over well in a game aimed at female readers aside from in those Prince of Tennis games on the PS2. But, on the subject of DR, while I did like Komaeda a lot back in the day, I liked Souda too. He was bending over backwards for a single crumb, he was a coward, generally unlikeable, and also kind of gross, but there was still something that had me liking him, and it was probably the fact that he's voiced by Hosoya, the same guy that voiced BWS's Julian. But we should get back to the /blog/ topic.

I did some more thinking, and I came to the realization that Hakase from Hashihime is of a similar flavor. He actually ticks all of my boxes, even though he's played for jokes a lot of the time. He's a complete degenerate but very pure in his actions and thoughts, vulnerable and a bit unstable, a nice chuuni/autist mix, stalker-ish, and thinks he's doing something great but isn't. On top of all that, he always lets Tamamori berate him and take advantage of him. It's moe. Hakase's route was kind of stupid, but he was my favorite boy overall.

There's a weird metaphor I use for my favorite characters of this type, and it's that they make my soul hit the ground and sink through the cracks. It's a great feeling, but it's so rare. Hakase was kind of there.

Yeah I agree, it would've be nice if there was more romance but it also would have been a bit out of place considering the setting and all. I mean, Daichi even thinks multiple times he would marry Seiji, I don't think he has any problems being romantically involved with Seiji. But is extremely afraid of freaking out Seiji. It's very common in male friendships to never be too open no matter how close you are, but there's always that sort of silent confirmation you'll always be there for each other. Seiji fits that to a tee, and it's not a shock he was dumped multiple times for how poorly he communicates in romantic relationships. I know people hate it but I found it interesting and surprisingly realistic. It would be pretty close to how real best friends would act.

That's because, unlike somebody like Yamada, he's not actually ugly. Pathetic, but not bad looking and still somewhat of a bishounen. That's the key to success with those types of characters.

They usually make a big point of the male lead accepting the trap for who he is in and out of feminine clothing (but for the sake of story he still wears feminine clothing). Surprisingly the character who most comes to mind for me when I hear this criteria you two are talking about is Shinji Matou from the Fate Stay Night series. Like it's an eroge series primarily targeted at men, but even then there are traditionally hot men for fangirls to lust over (Gilgamesh, Cu, Emiya). Yet Shinji has this dedicated cult niche fanbase that is head over heels for him. He ticks all the designated 'character you are supposed to hate' boxes: prideful, superiority complex, playboy, heroine rapist, etc. Occasionally, like in the fandisc or the new scenes added to the Heaven's Feel movies, they add some new content that humanizes him a bit more and shows more of his relationship to the main character before the plot stuff goes down. Similar to how SHIKI from Tsukihime was still given some cool scenes, despite also being a heroine rapist and murderer. This character is primarily made to move the plot along and make people really angry, and yet there's still a pretty hidden collection of scraps that some dedicated fans have furiously produced content for. Well, the creator has a soft spot for him too. Just the character that comes to mind for me for a large collection of reprehensible traits but there is still a moe factor. But a lot of fanbases will eviscerate you for daring to like misogynistic, fucked up characters, despite them being fictional.

Sorry for extreme off-topic to /blog/.

It's not just pearl clutchers who would side eye you for liking shinji though, pretty much anybody would. He gets silly jokes in spinoffs and such but not many people seriously expect anyone to husbando a character like him, especially for someone of his screentime and role in game. Adachi or Komaeda are understandable because they have a huge presence, but liking Shinji is kinda of like liking Goon#1.

I played the PSP version due to my needing to run around a lot. I don't have any particular attachment to porn, I came for the story and the experience and I remember some of the raunchy scenes just being blackscreened anyway. I believe the UI is jank no matter what, though.
