The gist of it is that moedenpa is simply J-pop with cute vocals and therefore not true denpa. It was mainly a way for early-mid 2000s denpa fans to harass fans of later denpa music, like Nanahira, Choko and Momobako. The term "trudenpa" is some sort of a parody of that mindset.

When I first started browsing these threads around three years back there were still people complaining about the prevalence of moe denpa, but these sort of discussions eventually dwindled, giving space to other topics.

On one hand I can see what they are getting at. On the other hand I can't help but feel that most "moe-songs" have no problem being grouped into "crazy/weird". Just stop up for a moment and think about what japanese society at large would think about the lyrics that e.g. 桃箱、ななひら、とろ美、MOSAIC.WAW, 33.turbo, etc sing. It's maids, lolis, and various sexual innuendos all over the place, just to mention some topics that often pop up. Maybe it's just me that hasn't listened to enough denpa to truly get what they are talking about?

What a lively time!

I have a feeling that the denpa community is getting smaller and smaller, only I have this feeling?

Once nanahira, toromi and mosaic stop, the genre will eventually die in Japan I believe. No new artists will emerge. Tell me a new artist who has got some space and attention in the scene in the last 5 years?

The reality is that no girl and no guy wants to become a denpa singer / arranger nowdays.

the denpa genre will boil down to kawaii moe music that will occasionally get some comiket releases when it parodies the music of some game or something. Great original releases no more.

The old guys stop and the new guys don't even know what denpa is.

The 2020s won't be promising, guys. The otaku culture of the 2020s will be filled with vtuber, alt-idols and smarthphone games. That's what kids born in the 2000's and 2010's like. We realize how time went by when we realize that the 90s will soon turn 30.

Are we really witnessing the final days of denpa? That'd be too sad...

It wouldn't be the first cultural phenomen that appeared suddenly, and died quietly. For obvious reasons we usually read about them as a footnote in history, but I bet the practisoners at the time were just as upset. Though there are already many things about otaku culture from the late 90s and the 00s that have largely dissapeared. Perhaps we must resign ourselves to seeing the beauty in what was, and try to kindle forth the next generation of cultural phenomena.

For whatever reason, I truly felt like denpa would be a more transcendental phenomenon, but just as you said, the enthusiasts of those bygone fads or phenomena or whatever must've thought the same. I'd like to keep an optimistic outlook and hope that denpa keeps on giving for a long time from now, though.

What I've been try to say, is that people have argued for the past decade over misunderstanding of fanmade terms - "denpa song" is the name Japanese fans gave to music showing denpa qualities, and likewise, "moe song" is the name Japanese fans gave to music showing moe qualities. These appear in the singing, composition and/or writing. From the early-mid 2000s onwards, the two qualities almost entirely stopped appearing by themselves, with most artists and bands combining moe and denpa qualities to varying degrees. It was only after that the combined moe-denpa music spread into Western otaku culture fanbases, but the distinction between the two qualities wasn't retained - "denpa" became an umbrella term, and "moe" was simply thought to be a part of "denpa". What people really were arguing over was the degree of moe expressed in the music.

Going over what you've written, I see the same mindset of placing "moedenpa" under the denpa umbrella. I think that the right way to understand it is putting "moedenpa" inbetween moe and denpa. The vast majority of music shared in these threads over their entire history were songs containing both denpa and moe - from UNDER17 and MOSAIC.WAV to Momobako, Nanahira and Toromi. There is considerably less music containing only denpa qualities and zero moe.

>>22156508
I don't think it's seeing the full picture if you only attribute it to single bands and artists. The dwindling sales of eroge and weak presence of otaku community as opposed to the mid-late 2000s are greater limiting factors in exposing new fans to the music. That said, the music has been going strong for almost 30 years now, under different names, so I don't really worry for it. We'll have it in one form or another.

Maybe it's clearer to say that moe started as a separate but related element that ended up becoming correlated and then conflated with denpa itself.

The thread began in early June and ended in late September. Summer, comiket, the period that all denpa thread should begin. In my opinion we should only have 2 threads per year. Winter and summer and in the middle of each, of course, the comiket. That way, with only 2 threads a year, the expectation and desire to talk about denpa would make the thread not as dead as it is being right now for example.

It's in the DVD that accompanies the music CD - around 70 Tohko Morinaga tracks. That's where the three live appearance videos are as well. I might put it up for download in the future, since it's a fairly large collection of moe-esque songs that people in these threads never got to know.

I'm surprised she returned to music so soon. If she wants to keep making music I think she should keep releasing albums as momobako, but doing it at a slower pace.

I think singing may be her passion but on the other hand it takes more than singing to sell an album. Her release cycle was too intense for several years in my opinion. When I look at my favorite musicians across genres, it takes them a year or more to put out a new album.

She's tried a lot of different things by now and made great albums before. I respect her decision but at the same time I wish I understood it better.

>> No.22209017 [View]

>>22208612
She never left music really. I saw her doing streams where she fooled around her DAW and made some music. It's good to know she genuinely likes it, that or she wanted to use her skills since it'd be a waste to throw it all away. As a vtuber you still have a lot of freedom. She's one of the vtubers that makes the most money by the way, it's pretty crazy to see an artist you've known for years quickly become so successful there.

>> No.22210040 [View]

>>22209017
From what I could tell, it looked like her ASMR videos were her most popular videos by an order of magnitude. I'd imagine that's her cash cow, which kind of makes sense I guess given her skills.

My personal theory is that her and many other denpa artists are running into the same problem, which is finding good music to perform. The main difference between momobako and nanahira is that nanahira made a hit, and she's since chosen to perform music almost exclusively by her collab partner on that song. Momobako never found that hit and has had a hard time finding a composer she liked. Therefore, she pivoted to a different medium that leverages the skills she's built over the years but simultaneously doesn't require a composer.

Both have become pretty YouTube-ified and possibly also targeting a younger audience. I'd also guess they're one of the few denpa singers who were full-time. Anyway, that's all just my speculation, I could be wrong.

>> No.22210469 [View]

>>22208612
I'm glad she's continuing to make music but as the other posters said said she makes a lot of money from youtube now, with the asmr videos bringing in a huge chunk. I fear the denpa scene is dying out but she was smart enough to pivot.
