If your whole reason for playing something like Mutant is because you want to play a 1000 hand abomination then it's fine to save scum. If you plan on playing mutant because you want to see what kind of freak you'll be then don't. You just have to set these sorts of limits yourself early on, it's your file after all. Just don't suddenly change the rules halfway or else you'll ruin the point.

NetHack has no sound at all, and starvation is one of the biggest early character killers. In Elona I have lost a dozen ≤40 hour characters and one ~400h one to dumb mistakes like that, and owned up to them. You man up and immediately start over. It's definitely not a mode everyone will enjoy, especially since time and character investment is greater than any other roguelike. But for those who do, they play by the damn rules.
