What are some simple ways of making myself sick (but not miserably sick) so that I have an excuse to miss my family christmas party? When do I take it?

Why is Touhou any good? What do I do to understand it, what games do I play, what manga do I read, what anime do I watch? The whole phenomenon just went way past me somehow.
