The first thing you need to get down with any sort of camera is lighting. You need more of it. But you don't want it be too harsh. You can play around with lamps and diffuse the light with paper. Or go outside on an overcast day or take photos in the shade. Natural light is easy to work with and most phone camera's will handle it well. Just make sure you are in focus.

Beyond that you could look into getting a tripod. If you feel crafty you could build a lightbox.
