This is not true. The first doujin he did was based on 12-nin no Yasashii Koroshiya while he was the host of the radio and that was already in late 00's.

Sugita and Kumagawa Kizoku (a guy he met in early free auditions who also partnered with him on the aforementioned YasaKoro doujin) first wrote the Getsuei Gakuen novel, then did a doujin visual novel (Getsui Gakuen Ergo) and then Mori-P offered him to have ASW make a full commercial release for it (Getsuei Gakuen Kou).
I was too lazy to learn kanji and now I regret it since I could have actually played the once it was released on Steam. I still bought it to support Sugita and ASW, though.
