There are pictures of what you describe and most of them look like horror shows and this is my opinion as raggedy annon. My standards are not high.

A plush doll and a body suit are entirely different constructions and materials. The higher end fabric dolls use a body suit on top of a plush / foam body.

Also most sewing is still done by hand. Especially complex forms like a plush.

A body suit only looks like a body because it’s got a person inside. You could stuff a bodysuit and do thread sculpting (think of how plush toy paws are made) or you could actually shape stuffing with layers of cotton batting and fluff. Or even carve a body from upholstery foam.

I’m thinking about making a shortstack midna plush in this way someday.
