The only way the "box" can grant the wish is if the person making the wish truly believes that wish is possible. Any doubts about whether the wish could actually happen in real life or whether wishes are real will have a negative impact on the wish.

Thus, wishing for something difficult but possible would be the smartest wish to make for someone that has common sense.

Or maybe I'm just reading too many light novels.
