Eva fascinates me because I'm always thinking about what she would have been like without always feeling second-best and desperate to please her father. You see in her scenes with Hideyoshi how tender, frank, and affectionate she can be, and he says himself that it's being around her family that brings her back to acting like a loudmouthed teen. Of the four siblings, she's probably built the most relatively happy and functional family (Krauss and Natsuhi can be forgiven since it was arranged). Obviously she's a kyouiku mama, but she's a passionate woman who isn't very secretive about her feelings, and I don't think George could ever doubt that his mother really loves him, even if she's prone to projecting her own wishes onto him. Hideyoshi is a honest hardworking guy who loves his wife and kid, and probably keeps her worst instincts in check. It's the kind of situation where you can't believe a woman who made a family like that could really be all bad, and for me it makes the focus on her and Ange in EP8 an inspired choice, because I can really believe that the goodness in Eva was real too. I can easily buy the notion that my perception of her has been distorted by unreliable portrayals of the nastiest parts of her personality, and Eva was just as much the loving wife, mother, and aunt as she was the cunning, ruthless striver who could never be the child that Kinzo wanted. What a great character.
