I started after phase 2 so my experience is somehow different from yours, i don't remember the game being that bad with RNG when i started.
The thing is that believe it or not the game got several updates in the last 6 years, some "good", some "bad", and so we have many ways to put RNG in our favour, the game still being grindy but trust me not that much as before and are even grindier games out there like VB.
Probably the most fair and proper critic that KC has ever had is its accessibility and even that is an stretch, imagine not knowing how to install browser addons, gacha games had turn everyone into spoiled lazy gambling addicts.

The question is if you are still willing to accept the shipgirls that came after 2017, for me KC cant be much better in terms of characters today, specially on the history buff side. Asahi is a marvelous design and her personality is lovely.
