The point of her backstory is that nobody is born enlightened. It's true that after her brother died, all she cared about was saving herself, and that she initially protected the youkai to keep her powers intact, but by the time she was sealed her main concern was protecting the youkai from the humans who were killing them off. And when the rest of the UFO cast escape the underground, the first thing they do is begin gathering the silo fragments they need to free her. Somebody who only cares about themselves doesn't inspire that kind of loyalty.

After being freed from hundreds of years of imprisonment, she immediately decides to continue her work towards achieving peace between humans and youkai. I'd imagine that it would be hard for a normal person to even mention the word equality after having been locked away that long, much less an evil one.
