I just read eroge and do 40 new cards a day. Very often when reading, words that I just got to in anki the day before would come up and I'd say to myself "wow if I hadn't done anki yesterday I would've had to look that word up," and I would also press R frequently on cards that I already had stocked up in anki but hadn't reached yet. If I cleared my backlog of 2900 unseen cards then I'd be able to read more smoothly and not have to spend 40+ minutes on anki every day doing 40 new cards so why not just spend a few days doing anki hardcore?

Are you implying you stop mining once you've reached some quota? When I first started reading I was adding 100 words a day easily. Now it's slowed down to 5-20 depending on the material but I encountered a lot more than 40 new words a day for a long time.

It's obviously not possible to do 400 new when you're just starting core or something but once you've seen a lot of kanji and can read definitions in japanese your retention goes up, or at least mine has. I've also seen all of these words at least once while reading, so what's so hard to believe? If anything you're the monkey who's deluded into thinking that everyone else gets stuck with shit tier beginner retention like you.
