How come you put color as an intermediary step before 3D form? That's tone, not color, and that's what you need to perform descriptive/classical drawing, which means to manipulate 2D tonal values to render the illusion of 3D shapes. The entire problem of image within drawing is solved without colors at all; to draw is to draw in black and white, period; color comes afterwards, as as its only real function (that is, the only one problem that cannot be solved by tones alone) is the depiction of temperature, which also works merely as a convention since heat or cold obviously aren't visual but tactile traits.
