To elaborate on what I was saying earlier, I think in terms of capturing the charm of the girls the ideal 'new take on the original designs' sprite pack for Higurashi might be done by the artist who produced these pieces. Excellent ability to do various different body types, good consistency with the girls' canon figures, and a solid grasp of expressions.
Unfortunately he's not taking commissions from individuals. Only doujin groups and other organizations.
Hopefully it does convey what I mean by a slimmer version of the girls than smurf's while still maintaining the sex appeal, though.
