No, it really wasn't a slog at all. The satire of contemporary political culture was great, the atmosphere of conspiracy and intrigue was almost seductive at times—offset very well by the naivety and charm of the young cast—and the biblical, omniscient tone it took during the narration set an excellent mood for the sense of dark forces converging towards apocalypse. That stentorian, almost homiletic voice is something I've not seen in a visual novel before, and it's certainly R07's angriest work. Umineko is too solidified as a personal favourite for me to compare fairly it to EP1, but it doesn't disappoint at all— and it's absolutely bursting with ideas compared to Onikakushi. There is so much engaging thematic material: dreams vs. reality, generational conflict, nature vs. humanity (especially re: childbirth and fertility), all bound up in an encompassing eschatological vision. If these themes are developed with the same attention and detail as in Umineko over the course of the story, then Ciconia will easily be a standout work. It's an extremely promising start.
