Oh no, not only do the rabbits have to live in a mansion, they are also required to snuggle with a princess so she can sleep comfortably? What terrible abuse, I can't believe any of them bother sticking around. I mean, she's only a historical figure who's renowned for her beauty, it must be such an inconvenience to have to lazily let her spoon you while you all sleep in her palace.

Someone call the cops, this is animal cruelty at its worst.

You're in good company. The most influential men of late 7th-early 8th century Japan can't all have been wrong.

I think it's meant to be something of a double entendre (or even triple, maybe) that plays off the etymological origins of 'lunatic' in the Late Latin 'lūnāticus', which can be rendered in English approximately as ''moonstruck', which would refer both to insanity and epilepsy by the folk-understanding of those conditions (they were thought to be influenced by the phases of the moon).

However, those meanings were secondary applications of 'lūnāticus' itself in the original Late Latin, because the word itself, as explicitly constructed, meant "Of, or living on, the moon".

So what we have is a Princess who has done some crazy things. A Lunatic (in common parlance) Princess.

She also happens to be a Princess who is from the moon, and once lived there. A Lunatic (by an unintended, but literal reading of the word's root) Princess.

And, as it happens, she is a Princess whose life is influenced by the phases of the moon, since the link between the earth and the moon in the mythos of Gensokyo is tied to the phases of the moon, and the strength of that link influences her susceptibility to being reached by lunar emissaries and messages. A Lunatic (by a non-figure-of-speech reading of the root word's intended meaning) Princess.
