Having used both, I like KKLC the best, because the graphemes are consistent in most of the entries. But I agree with you that some of the mnemonics are bad, which is why it's best to make your own mnemonics (like what RTK instructed us to do) or steal them like what you suggested. I kind of extend this idea by aggregating mnemonics from multiple resources including henshall's 漢字完全ガイド and kanji damage (I'd say this is 99% useless).
