I wonder if Kasen is neither human nor oni, but transitioning between the two. It is possible that she lost her arm, perhaps in an oni related event, and submitted to drinking from her magical sake box until she could be reunited with it, knowing full well the side-effects that would come from it.
As time stretched on and her arm still yet to be found, she would become a hermit hoping it could stave off the effects of the box as it spread through her like a cancer. She'd put up her hair in buns in denial of what had taken root and continued to grow there.
