A small example of why Touhou is mainstream (or just famous if it's not already mainstream) for the wrong reasons:

Touhou Fan 1: I love Kogasa! She is awesome!
Touhou Fan 2: Say, why do you like Kogasa? I have noticed many people liking her.
Touhou Fan 1: "BOOOO!"
Touhou Fan 2: *facepalm*

She's just a joke character. Like Cirno and so on. Not that I hate joke characters, I'm perfectly fine with them. But most of the moe stuff are exposed to the newcomers of Touhou and they notice that the majority of fans love these characters and nothing much deeper than that, so they are turned off by these pedophiles and the moe content. So, they see nothing else that's "actually" appealing about this franchise, such as deep context that the minority of fans follow. Isn't it sad, /jp/?
