I think your right about the EDM. As a golden era fan I think member dynamics was a big deal. Back in those days the members were counter balancing to each other. You had a big dynamic between the members. You had Yuko and Tsuji in the same group. You had short Mari and tall kaori. You had rivals and all sorts of conflicts between the members. The management threw in Maki knowing it would stir things up. The group was run more like a reality TV show. I am not saying they need to go back to the melodrama of the golden era member did, but at least get a few members who are counter to each other for the sake of group balance. The old musume had members who were from different economic and social classes and threw them all together for better or worse. The modern group mostly contains good girls from good familes. Yeah I get it. They are more 'pure' then the OG. But they they are also more boring to watch too.

Another problem with MM(upfront) is that they are always so behind the trends. They eventually catch on the popular trends but by then it's not even cool anymore. I wish they just do something completely off the wall nuts and new. They don't take much risks anymore.
