Contrary to what the ending of Okami claims, the Eastern gods generally don't care much whether people pray to them or not. It's more of a social mechanism. If you feel like praying, you should, but you shouldn't expect it to be heard in any case other than an emergency, or what the powers that be consider to be an emergency. For example, Mongol invasions are an emergency since they threaten cultural and religious values. Earthquakes that kill millions are not emergencies, since the gods enjoy shaking the earth for laughs and seeing people run and scream.
