I don't think people expect a relationship or anything, but the parasocial relationship is still a valid one, so long as you understand the reality of the situation you're entering on both sides. Teamates mostly learned this during the Synthesis arc, and came to the realization that GFE isn't bad if you hold no real assumption of that applying to you as an individual, but towards the idealized concept of the Teamate.
At least, that's how I figured it out early on. Seeing it as closer to a Pygmalion situation then a situation of "maybe one day I'll be the one."
