It should be noted that, despite the fanbase placing a large amount of emphasis on this relationship, the fact of the matter is that it's a very minor part of Mima's characterization in the PC98 era, accounting for maybe 2 lines of dialogue between the two characters even hinting at the student/teacher dynamic. Mima has far more interactions throughout PC98 with Reimu, and in fact she was the original "Hakurei Guest" to stay at the shrine after being defeated (even if her stay was forced and brief).

If Mima was going to be reintroduced, it would have been back during IN, as a member of Marisa's team. Instead, we got Alice.
