For someone who took two semesters of Japanese, but no longer has room in his schedule to keep taking it in the future, what would you suggest for continued independent study?

We used the Genki 1 textbook in class. Was a bit of a slow class, we did Chapters 1-6 in the first semester and 7-12 in the second.

Should I just buy Genki 2 and work with that, or is it bad for self-study and only really meant for classroom learning?
