You're right, there really shouldn't be a reason to dodge it in the middle but back when I sucked at these games I'd find myself surprised more often by the bullets on the side because they didn't travel straight up and down. Still, it's very easy to follow the basic pattern in the middle and very hard to break from it, much like Orin's Blazing Wheel.
