It's called the "Loudness war" and Nakata is the most important Japanese general in this war. It's caused by the extreme compression most music has nowadays. It's kinda a technical topic, but in a nutshell is that the gap between "quiet" and "loud" sounds in music is being deliberately narrowed (made louder) by mixing engineers since the late 80s to make songs sound more "bangier" in stuff like phone earbuds and car stereos. The result is that even portions that are supposed to be quiet hit the 0dB peak, and that music sounds bad no mater if you're using $10 earbuds or $1500 planar headphones
