The original Space Marine legions were formed to reclaim the lost colonies of Man by brutally beating down anyone who opposeed them & then protect them from both xenos and Chaos. To do so, they are essenially indoctrinated to suppress any sort of real emotion, free thinking, or even personal identity, lest they be tempted by the agents of the Warp. But fun fact: when you spend centuries forcing people to repress every single thing that makes them human, they tend to snap in rather extreme ways.
