Who is this?

So I've arrived in Japan for one year's study (on exchange, 2nd year). Study of course does not begin for a few months now, but I'm on holidays and I thought I'd enjoy myself.
Should I approach japanese girls or wait for them to approach me?
As they are generally nice to everybody I couldn't really tell whether they like me or not. Should I make friends first or would that result in friend zone? Besides which, I would prefer for them to approach me as I am shy.
Also, what do they look for in a guy?
I am skinny, feminine, long hair, with facial hair as well (don't shave). I normally wear sarouelles (kind of look like japanese traditional hakama, but reverse (puffy at top, thinning to ankles) with oriental/gipsy clothing. Should I change anything? Would I be too weird for them? What to do.

So I just watched machine girl (fucking awesome), Kisaragi (hilarious) suicide club, whiteout, and tons of J-horror...

Anyone have any recommendations on some other "newer" kick ass J-flicks?
