Not really, you can have a planet devoid of living organisms. The boulder can exist fine without the moss, the moss however needs a suitable environment to live on.

It's based on the definition of growth, accumulating matter randomly is not the same as responding to stimuli and converting energy and chemicals into cellular components which is what growth constitutes in our current definition
