i think that
起きる is just a image.
it is like stand up a fallen stick.

wake up（起きる) does use a metaphor that human's body wake up like a stood stick.
also ”occur” is same .
by the way,
I usually use 起きる or 起きた when you wake up.
and I use 何かが起きる when something happen.
I don't use only 起きる in that case.
absolutely,I add 何か（something) on head at 起きる。
